Todd Clare (b. 1986, Australia) is known for his evocative, richly textured paintings that explore the passage of time, memory, and the impermanence of life. Drawing inspiration from the irregular and mundane forms of everyday objects and materials, he creates both large-scale works and intimate pieces on found objects and offcuts. His process reflects a deep curiosity about transformation—the chance marks and textures that emerge unexpectedly, offering a kind of reverence for what is often overlooked.
Clare’s work carries a sense of time and history, as if the paintings themselves have lived and aged. Surfaces marked by cracks, dirt, and layers of faded hues evoke both decay and restoration, underscoring the fragile beauty found in imperfection. His art captures the essence of the materials he works with, highlighting the subtle, often unnoticed narratives that unfold around us. Like the restoration of an old home, his practice speaks to the gradual process of transformation, repetition, and renewal.
Influenced by artists like Jean Dubuffet and Antoni Tàpies, with a connection to Art Informel, as well as abstract painters Agnes Martin and Helen Frankenthaler, Todd’s work reflects a deep respect for the materiality and emotional resonance of abstraction.
