Bio

Todd Clare (b. 1986, Maclean, Australia) creates paintings that are rich in texture and evoke a deep sense of time. His work explores the beauty found in the everyday—mundane objects, materials, and the process of experimentation. Through both large and small-scale pieces, Clare embraces chance marks and unexpected textures, offering a quiet reverence for what is often overlooked.

His paintings feel as though they have lived, carrying a history within their surfaces. The cracks, dirt, and layers of worn colour suggest both decay and renewal, capturing the delicate balance between imperfection and beauty. Much like the restoration of an old building, Clare’s work is about gradual transformation—a process that unfolds with time and repetition.

Influenced by the raw expressionism of Jean Dubuffet and Antoni Tàpies, and the abstraction of Joe Bradley and Agnes Martin, Clare’s paintings reflect a deep connection to materiality, inviting a quiet reflection on the passing of time and the subtle stories hidden within the ordinary.
